Chronic diseases exert a significant negative impact on the health and economies of countries, accounting for more than 30% of all deaths. They have a profound effect on the physical, emotional and mental well-being of individuals, often making it difficult to carry on with daily routines and relationships. Yet even as their harmful impact on health and economies strengthens and spreads globally, there is still only limited public health, financial, and political support for programs aimed at their prevention.
The innovation of the proposed project is twofold. The first innovative feature of the proposed platform is the selected application fields. The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD) and Renal Insufficiency are two fields that according to the statistics mentioned in previous section are indeed in need for a solution like CHRONIOUS. In addition to those fields, in its final form, CHRONIOUS is designed to be an adaptive system that will provide a universal platform that will be able to manage all sorts of different chronic diseases.
Offering innovative services and components for both the patient suffering from the chronic diseases as well as the healthcare professional is the second innovative feature of the proposed system. CHRONIOUS will offer patients suffering from chronic diseases a sophisticated and multidisciplinary tool in order to aid them monitor: vital signals, dietary habits and plans, drug intake, environmental parameters, biochemical parameters, activity and social context. Healthcare professionals on the other hand will be provided with supporting decision support and data analysis tools; thus aiding them with the healthcare monitoring process.
CHRONIOUS accommodates key technological fields such as: wearables, sensing systems (vital signals, environmental, activity and context-aware), sensor management techniques, Intelligent multi-parametric data fusion algorithms and medical decision support systems, medical guidelines, ontologies and wireless communication networks, advance interfaces (taking into account Human Computer Interaction factors).
